Tour de France Femmes video prep

Instead of riding Mt. Rainier again today, I’m still recovering from some sort of respiratory bug

That does not mean I’m idle though. Mostly.
Normally Brenda has me occupied and interested but she’s on a work trip so I’m stuck to my own devices, mostly watching Youtube and scary movies. After watching Katie Kookaburra‘s high quality videos I was inspired to find out what she did. Luckily she made this video about her endurance setup that gave me some clues.

Video? Video!

First thing I had to decide, which actually was the last thing, was what kind of camera would I get? Would I do 3D, or conventional? Well, given the set up, which I will get to later, and the complexity of editing and doing 3D, I decided conventional.

Then I had to figure out what camera. I looked at GoPro, full stop. Why did I not look at other brands? I guess I don’t have the patience or willingness and time to deal with a lemon so close to the trip. That left between the models.

Really it was between Hero 9, 10, or 11. The Hero 11 mini lacked the screen which makes it harder to work with. There are plenty of comparison and review videos out there so I’ll just say I went with the Hero Black 10 bundle. Yes I got a selfie stick. It also came with two batteries and that selfie stick doubles as a tripod. I’ve seen my buddy Matt Setter use a selfie stick to great effect a number of times so I’m also following in his footsteps.

Gadget strategy

The fun part is how I was going to shoot video. From Katie’s clues, I bought a Quad Lock to mount my phone to so I could do talking in the moment. Ignore the flat bars, and know that it’s going to be a lot easier for me to change music now or shoot a photo on the fly. You just push down the collar and twist off. This leaves my back pockets for snacks that my good arm can reach.

Funny, but the first thing I had decided was getting a fancy K-Edge Combo mount so I can have my Wahoo AND GoPro mounted at the same time. Also when I’m riding at night it’s a WAY more stable mount than the light mount I have. The only thing is, it’s stuck facing forward, or is it?

Yep, I’m going to need a swivel for those “strafing” shots of giant valleys and peaks as well as race fans. There were a few but I opted for a basic cheapie.

But how was I going to get those shots you just can’t do from a front mount? You just have to have a stick for that, which I got. Well I found these quick release gadgets!

As you can see, they have the power of a Dragonball, or a wizard or something and you can quickly move the camera from the front mount to the stick! I think I have all my equipment worked out so you all can get a ringside seat to the action, as soon as my editing is done!

Plan for Youtube domination

So here’s my video coverage in all its glory! I may need front facing radar.

Do let me know what you think. Will it work? Will this effort go down in fame, or just go down? Maybe I need two GoPros?!?!
