Last weekend we went to Maui for my nephew’s 33rd anniversary, and of course we rented bikes instead of a car.

We started in Lahaina and had to stop at the Hawaiian aesthetic equivalent of a barn. There’s also a huge banyan tree that looks like several trees. Giant branches are supported by rounds and it’s a really peaceful place.

We stopped at Makaluapuna Point or the “Dragon’s Teeth”. There’s a nice labyrinth there which we walked. A very different contemplation than my ride to Sequim in the rain.

The formation that makes up this point seemed like a large lava flow that hit the sea and solidified. You can make out rivers of lava. The “teeth” must have formed when some water hit the edge of the flow, but I’m guessing.

Of course I left a sticker. Later on the way back, after meeting my old teacher for lunch, we stopped at a cemetery. All good rides pass one. There were a lot of really poignant memorials, and this one is for a baby that didn’t last the day. We all lose someone at some point, but children are just not natural. They must be loved still with the necklace.

Anyway Serena would have loved the cat, which I guess was supposed to be warded off by the jars of water left around all the graves.
Maui was a nice place to ride and I know Serena would have liked the warmth and sweets.
